South Bank

South Bank (electoral ward) sits on the south side of the River Tees within the borough of Redcar and Cleveland, forming part of the wider Teesside urban area close to Middlesbrough. It’s a compact, traditionally working‑class neighbourhood of terraced streets and local high‑streets, linked by a local rail stop on the Tees Valley line and by roads that tie it into the industrial towns nearby.

The ward’s character was shaped by 19th‑century iron and steel development driven by ironstone from the Eston area, and like much of Teesside it felt the impact of late 20th‑century industrial decline. There’s still a strong sense of community, with neighbourhood shops, community centres and ongoing regeneration projects seeking to build new economic and social opportunities while acknowledging the area’s industrial heritage.
