Redcar and Cleveland

Unitary authority in England

Coordinates:54.57, -0.99
OS grid ref:NZ 65 19

Redcar and Cleveland is a coastal unitary authority on the north‑east coast of England, facing the North Sea. The area includes seaside towns such as Redcar, Saltburn-by-the-Sea and Marske-by-the-Sea, together with inland communities like Guisborough, Loftus and parts of Teesside.

Geographically it’s striking - sandy beaches, dramatic cliffs and the heathered slopes of the North York Moors and Cleveland Hills are close by, and the long-distance Cleveland Way brings walkers through coastal scenery. Victorian heritage survives in places like Saltburn-by-the-Sea with its pier and cliff lift, and there are popular local attractions such as Redcar Racecourse and historic ruins like Guisborough Priory.

Economically the area has deep industrial roots in ironstone mining and steelmaking, with the loss of the Redcar steelworks in the 2010s still shaping local life, while the nearby port and growing offshore wind and logistics sectors at Teesside and Teesport point to regeneration. Socially there are strong community networks and a mixed picture of post‑industrial challenges alongside a growing tourism and leisure offer, which the local authorities and voluntary groups continue to develop.
