Grangetown is a working‑class suburb in the borough of Redcar and Cleveland on the North East coast of England, just to the west of Redcar. It developed in the late 19th and early 20th centuries as Victorian housing for workers in nearby ironstone mines, steelworks and chemical plants around the River Tees and Teesside, and its compact terraces and grid streets still reflect that industrial heritage while sitting close to the North Sea coastline and the wider North Yorkshire landscape.
Like much of the area, Grangetown was affected by deindustrialisation and the loss of heavy industry, but it retains a strong local community, schools, small shops and sports clubs and is the focus of ongoing regeneration efforts. Its location gives easy access to Redcar’s beach and coastal walks, while many residents commute into the Tees Valley for work, so the neighbourhood blends a traditional industrial past with contemporary social and economic change.
