Chelmsley Wood is a large residential area in the metropolitan borough of Solihull, immediately east of the city of Birmingham. It grew in the late 20th century as one of the UK’s major post‑war council developments, largely built on former woodland and linked to the motorway network via the nearby M6 and M42, with Birmingham Airport and the National Exhibition Centre close by, giving it a very suburban‑industrial fringe character.
The area is centred on a shopping and community hub and has seen repeated regeneration efforts aimed at improving housing, services and employment prospects; it combines pockets of deprivation with strong local organisations and green spaces where remnants of the original woodland remain. Its location on the edge of two large urban authorities means Chelmsley Wood often feels both connected to and distinct from the wider economic and cultural life of Birmingham and Solihull.
