Meriden is a large village and civil parish in the Metropolitan Borough of Solihull, in the West Midlands of England, roughly between Birmingham and Coventry and beside the A45. It sits in the much‑valued Meriden Gap, a stretch of green belt countryside that helps keep the two cities apart, and the village green with its medieval cross and war memorial has long fuelled Meriden’s popular claim to be the “geographical centre of England”. The historic St Laurence Church and traditional village features give it a distinctly rural feel despite good road links to nearby urban centres.
Today Meriden combines a commuter population with local trades, farms and small businesses, and it retains an active community life with fêtes, pubs and walking routes through the surrounding countryside. Its identity is shaped as much by rural conservation and green‑belt campaigning as by its quirky centre‑of‑England fame, making it a place where historical character and modern commuting pressures coexist.
