Brean is a low-lying coastal village and civil parish in Somerset, sitting on the edge of the Bristol Channel a few miles west of Burnham-on-Sea. Its long sandy strand and dunes, often called Brean Sands, lie beside the wide mudflats of the Severn Estuary, whose huge tidal range shapes local wildlife and makes the area popular for birdwatching, walking and traditional family beach holidays.
The local economy leans heavily on tourism - a notable holiday park, caravan sites and amusements bring a strong seasonal trade - alongside agriculture inland. Dominating the skyline is nearby Brean Down, a limestone headland with ancient archaeological remains and a 19th–20th century fort, now managed for visitors; the result is a mixture of simple seaside leisure, farming community life and a stretch of historically interesting countryside.
