Nether Stowey sits at the eastern edge of the Quantock Hills in Somerset, perched above rolling farmland with views towards the Bristol Channel. The village is a gateway to the Hills’ wooded combes and walking routes, and nearby earthworks and a medieval motte belonging to Stowey Castle hint at a long-settled landscape.
It is best known for its late‑18th‑century association with the poet Samuel Taylor Coleridge; his former home, Coleridge Cottage, is now a small museum and a draw for literary visitors. The local economy remains largely rural but supported by tourism, independent shops and pubs, while a compact village centre, church and active community groups keep a strong social life.
