Skilgate is a very small, predominantly rural parish set in west Somerset close to the border with Devon. The village and scattered farmsteads sit among rolling hedged fields and quiet lanes typical of the fringes of Exmoor, with a modest medieval church and a number of stone farmhouses giving a distinctly historic, unspoilt character.
Its economy has long been centred on mixed agriculture, and today life remains quiet with many residents commuting to nearby towns for work and services; community life is intimate, centred on the church and occasional village events. The parish’s low population, rural landscape and surviving historic buildings make it attractive to walkers and anyone interested in traditional West Country parish life.
