Wookey is a small rural village and civil parish in Somerset, a couple of miles west of Wells on the southern edge of the Mendip Hills. The area’s limestone geology and the nearby River Axe give rise to notable karst features, the most famous being the showcaves at Wookey Hole Caves, which have shaped both the landscape and the local identity.
The parish retains a quietly agricultural character while tourism connected to the caves and the attractive Mendip countryside supports local businesses and jobs. Community life centres on the village hall, pub and church, with strong day-to-day links into Wells for shops and services; historically the area has deep roots stretching back through medieval times, reflected in its buildings and lanes.
