Stratford St. Mary is a small riverside village in the district of Babergh in Suffolk, England, sitting on the banks of the River Stour near the Essex border. It lies within the attractive rolling countryside of Dedham Vale and is a short drive from Manningtree and Colchester; the village is also bisected by the A12, which gives it a mix of tranquillity and a fair bit of passing traffic at the old bridge.
The settlement retains a strong historic feel with a medieval church, timber-framed houses, riverside meadows and traditional pubs; it originally grew from farming and local river trade and today combines agriculture, small local businesses and tourism, with boating and fishing popular on the Stour. Socially there’s an active village community organising fetes and clubs, and a steady interest in conserving the rural character while accommodating commuters and visitors.
