East Bergholt is a pretty riverside village in the Babergh district of Suffolk, England, set in the rolling countryside of the Dedham Vale and beside the River Stour. It is best known as the birthplace of the landscape painter John Constable and many of the views around Flatford and Willy Lott’s Cottage featured in his work; those riverside spots, some cared for by the National Trust, draw walkers and art enthusiasts to the area.
Historically a rural, agricultural settlement, the village retains a mix of timber‑framed houses, a traditional village green and a compact local community. Tourism linked to Constable and the surrounding countryside complements farming, and the place enjoys a quiet, village atmosphere popular with painters, walkers and anyone seeking classic East Anglian scenery.
