Clare is a compact market town in West Suffolk, Suffolk, England, tucked into the gentle valley of the River Stour. The centre mixes medieval and Georgian architecture, narrow lanes and a village green, and is particularly picturesque around Clare Castle Country Park where the ruins of Clare Castle and a former railway corridor make a pleasant linear park beside the river.
Historically the town grew as a medieval market and wool centre associated with the de Clare family, and nearby the 13th‑century Clare Priory and the parish church reflect that past. Today Clare sustains a lively local scene of independent shops, antiques and galleries, small‑scale farming and tourism, while many residents commute to larger centres such as Bury St Edmunds or Cambridge; walking routes and local events keep a strong community feel.
