Shiney Row is a small former colliery village on the western edge of Sunderland, now largely residential with a close‑knit community and a mix of council and private housing, local shops and pubs. Its character is shaped by a 19th‑ and 20th‑century mining past, and many residents commute into the city or the wider Tyne and Wear area while enjoying nearby green spaces.
Penshaw is best known for the imposing Penshaw Monument, a 19th‑century memorial in the style of a Greek temple that crowns Penshaw Hill and provides wide views across the River Wear valley towards Durham. The monument and surrounding parkland are popular with walkers and photographers, and the village shares the region’s industrial heritage while serving as a local focal point for community events.
