Hetton-le-Hole is a former mining town in the City of Sunderland, Tyne and Wear, England, historically part of County Durham. Set on the edge of the Durham coalfield, the town is notable for the pioneering Hetton Colliery Railway, one of the earliest steam‑worked mineral lines linking pits to the River Wear.
The community still wears its mining heritage proudly, but the landscape and economy have changed since the pits closed: former colliery land has been reclaimed as Hetton Lyons Country Park with lakes, trails and cycleways, while many residents now work in local services, light industry or commute to nearby centres.
