Hetton is a civil parish and former mining community a few miles inland from the city of Sunderland in north‑east England, historically part of County Durham and now within the Tyne and Wear area. The landscape mixes red‑brick terraces and suburban housing with patches of farmland and the popular green space of Hetton Lyons Country Park, a reclaimed colliery site of lakes, woodland and walking routes that draws wildlife and local visitors.
The locality grew up around coal extraction in the 19th and 20th centuries - sites such as Hetton Colliery and the pioneering Hetton Colliery Railway, engineered by George Stephenson, mark its industrial heritage. Since pit closures the area has become largely residential, with community groups, heritage projects and memorials keeping the mining story alive while many residents commute to Sunderland and nearby towns for work, leisure and services.
