Camberley is a small town in the borough of Surrey Heath, in Surrey, England, sitting on the fringe of heathland that gives the borough its name. It grew in the 19th century as "Cambridge Town" to serve the nearby Royal Military College at Sandhurst and was renamed Camberley in 1877 to avoid confusion with Cambridge; its history and location close to the Hampshire border mean strong military and defence links, with Farnborough's aviation industry and various local office parks influencing the economy. The town centre offers a mix of shopping and leisure - including a theatre and cinema - while extensive surrounding heaths and woods provide popular walking and outdoor space near places like Bagshot.
Today Camberley has a largely commuter and professional population, benefitting from good road connections to the M3/A331 and easy access to nearby towns such as Frimley and Guildford, and a relatively short journey into London. Recent regeneration has modernised parts of the centre while local clubs, markets and community events keep a strong neighbourhood feel, blending town conveniences with easy access to the countryside.
