Newtimber is a tiny, largely rural civil parish in the Mid Sussex district of West Sussex, set on the chalk ridges of the South Downs National Park. The landscape is dominated by rolling chalk downland, small woodlands and pasture, with a scattering of farms and historic features; the area is known for species-rich grassland, ancient tumuli and a quiet network of public footpaths that attract walkers and naturalists.
At the centre of local interest is Newtimber Place, a historic manor with old gardens, and the parish’s character remains strongly agricultural and conservation-focused rather than commercial. The community is very small and close-knit, and the parish’s archaeological and ecological value - typical of the downs - gives it a distinct rural charm despite being within easy reach of larger towns in West Sussex.
