Hawcoat and Newbarns lie on the southern edge of the Furness peninsula within Barrow-in-Furness, part of the unitary authority of Westmorland and Furness. The area is essentially suburban, with interwar and post‑war housing in Hawcoat and older streets in Newbarns, punctuated by small parks, local shops and pleasant views over Morecambe Bay and the nearby fells.
Historically the community expanded with the 19th‑century boom in shipbuilding, iron and engineering that shaped much of Furness, and the local economy remains linked to the shipyard and engineering employers in Barrow alongside retail and public services. There’s a strong local identity, with schools, sports clubs and walking routes nearby, and recent efforts have focused on regeneration and improving facilities while keeping the area's green spaces and coastal outlook.
