Flookburgh is a small coastal village in the unitary authority of Westmorland and Furness, sitting on the northern edge of Morecambe Bay. Its low-lying mudflats and salt marshes give dramatic tidal vistas and a long tradition of shellfishing and small-scale fishing, and the village name is often linked to the flatfish, or fluke, found in the bay. Historically it developed as a fishing and agricultural settlement and still retains a compact, village feel.
The village’s location makes it handy for visiting nearby places such as Cartmel and Grange-over-Sands and it is within easy reach of the Lake District, so tourism, commuting and farming all play a part in the local economy. Socially it has an active community with village halls, pubs and amateur sports, and the seasonal rhythms of the tide and harvest remain an important part of daily life.
