Lower Holker is a quiet, largely rural parish on the edge of Morecambe Bay in the unitary authority of Westmorland and Furness, just inland from the coast and not far from the market town of Grange-over-Sands. The area includes the village of Flookburgh and the settlement of Cark, with the handy Cark and Cartmel railway station on the Furness Line giving easy connections to Lancaster and Barrow-in-Furness.
The parish is best known for the historic Holker Hall estate, a stately home with gardens and event activity that draws visitors, and for its mix of agriculture, small-scale fisheries and tourism; Flookburgh retains a long association with shrimping and cockling on the bay. Wildlife-rich mudflats, easy access to the Lake District fringes and a tradition of village pubs, clubs and local events give the area a distinct rural community feel; administratively it was formerly in the South Lakeland district of Cumbria until the local government reorganisation.
