Hawkshead is a small historic parish in Westmorland and Furness, set in the heart of the Lake District of England. The compact, stone-built village sits among fells and small lakes, close to Esthwaite Water and within easy reach of Tarn Hows, Coniston and Windermere, giving it a classic Lakeland setting of winding lanes and dramatic views.
Hawkshead retains a medieval market-town feel with narrow alleys, 17th- and 18th-century buildings and the old grammar school famously attended by William Wordsworth; nearby connections with Beatrix Potter and several National Trust sites add cultural interest. The local economy is largely visitor-driven - independent shops, galleries, cafes and pubs serve walkers and day-trippers - while a small resident community keeps farming and traditional crafts alive alongside tourism.
