Witherslack, Meathop and Ulpha lie on the southern fringe of the Lake District within the unitary authority of Westmorland and Furness. The parish contains a striking mix of low-lying peatlands and wetlands such as the Witherslack Mosses and Meathop Moss, important conservation sites for rare plants, dragonflies and breeding birds, rising into quieter upland fells around Ulpha that attract walkers and birdwatchers.
Locally the economy is mainly agricultural with a small but steady contribution from tourism and conservation work; the built landscape of stone cottages, historic churches and farmsteads reflects its rural past and the old county identity of Westmorland. Community life is anchored by parish events and volunteer groups who help manage the nature reserves, so the area combines traditional rural living with strong local stewardship of its distinctive habitats.
