Hindley sits within the Metropolitan Borough of Wigan in Greater Manchester, historically part of Lancashire. The town expanded rapidly during the 19th century with coal mining and textile mills, and that industrial past is still visible in rows of Victorian terraces and local heritage buildings.
Today it is largely residential with a compact high street, community clubs and local sports teams, and a strong sense of local identity rooted in its mining past. Regular rail services provide links into Wigan and Manchester, while nearby parks and green spaces offer a quieter contrast to the former industrial landscape.
