Idmiston is a small rural parish in Wiltshire, a few miles north‑east of Salisbury on the eastern edge of Salisbury Plain. The area includes the villages of Idmiston and Porton and is threaded by the chalkstream River Bourne, with rolling downland and mixed farmland giving the parish a distinctly rural character.
Despite its quiet village feel, the parish is notable for the presence of Porton Down, the large government research and defence establishment whose ranges and laboratories have significantly influenced the local economy, land use and employment since the early 20th century. Local life balances agriculture, small‑scale community activities centred on village halls and churches, and commuters or specialists working in nearby towns and at the science park, producing a mix of traditional Wiltshire rurality and modern technical links.
