Royal Wootton Bassett is a historic market town and civil parish in Wiltshire, England, sitting west of Swindon on the rolling chalk of the Wiltshire Plain. Its long High Street is lined with Georgian and Victorian buildings, independent shops and cafés, giving the town a strong village‑like character despite good road links and commuter ties.
The town gained the royal prefix in 2011 in recognition of the public’s compassionate response to the repatriation ceremonies for fallen service personnel, and that civic pride remains a notable part of local life. Economically it functions partly as a dormitory for nearby employment centres, benefitting from close access to the M4, and is shaped by nearby former RAF activity at RAF Lyneham and a busy calendar of community events and remembrance traditions.
