Wilton is a small historic market town in south-west Wiltshire, set on the banks of the River Nadder just a few miles west of Salisbury. Once the county town, it lost that status to Salisbury in the 13th century but still retains a compact medieval street pattern and a riverside charm that belies its modest size; the town sits close to the rolling chalk of Salisbury Plain, making it a handy base for exploring the surrounding countryside.
Despite its quiet appearance, Wilton has notable cultural and economic history: Wilton House, the grand seat of the Pembroke family built on the site of a former abbey, is a major visitor attraction and film location, and the town is famous for its carpet-weaving trade - the name “Wilton carpet” is known across the world. Today the high street mixes independent shops, antiques and cafés, with riverside walks and regular local events keeping a strong community feel.
