The civil parish of Strensall and Towthorpe sits a few miles north of York, historically within North Yorkshire. Its most striking geographic feature is Strensall Common, a wide area of lowland heath and woodland designated as an SSSI and long used as a military training area, which gives the parish a distinctive mix of protected wildlife, open recreational space and expanses of open sky unusual so close to the city.
The villages themselves have medieval roots and a compact, village-centre feel with churches, local shops and a primary school, but increasingly serve as commuter settlements for York. Local life balances agriculture and small businesses with community clubs, fetes and conservation-minded activity; pressures for housing and modern amenities are often weighed against protecting the common and the parish’s historic character.
