Twechar is a small former mining village in East Dunbartonshire, Scotland, on the northern fringe of the Central Belt, a short drive north‑east of Glasgow and close to Cumbernauld and Kilsyth. It sits amid mixed farmland and post‑industrial woodlands with countryside views towards the Campsie Fells, making it appealing for walkers and commuters alike.
Historically the village grew up around coal mining and the local pits shaped its social life; earlier still, the line of the Antonine Wall and nearby Roman remains point to a much older story. Since the closure of heavy industry Twechar has faced economic challenges but also grassroots regeneration and community projects aimed at improving housing, green spaces and local facilities, leaving a resilient, village‑scale community character.
