Cumbernauld is a post‑war new town in North Lanarkshire, Scotland, sitting roughly between Glasgow and Stirling. Designed and expanded from the 1950s to house overspill from the city, it’s known for its distinctive 1960s–70s modernist and Brutalist architecture, a large town centre that has provoked strong views over the years, and plenty of surrounding green space including woods, glens and reservoirs such as Cumbernauld Glen.
Today the town blends light industry, distribution and commuter living with ongoing regeneration and local community activity - shops, community arts and regular events. Historically the area is interesting too: the line of the Antonine Wall and nearby Roman sites such as Castlecary and Bar Hill lie close by, so there’s a surprising mix of modern planning and ancient landscape within easy reach of larger urban centres.
