The coastal market town of Dunbar in East Lothian, Scotland sits on the North Sea where rugged sandstone cliffs meet wide sandy bays. It looks out towards the iconic Bass Rock in the Firth of Forth, a huge gannet colony that draws birdwatchers, while the harbour, Belhaven Bay and clifftop walks are favourites with walkers and sea anglers. The town is proud of the John Muir Birthplace and its place on the John Muir Way, marking its links to the famous conservationist.
Historically a fortified royal burgh with the remains of Dunbar Castle and the site of notable battles, the town grew as a fishing port and later with light industry. Today its economy mixes tourism, local services and food and drink businesses such as Belhaven Brewery, alongside connections to offshore renewables; a busy community calendar and good rail and road links to Edinburgh keep Dunbar lively for residents and visitors alike.
