East Lothian

Council area in Scotland

Coordinates:55.95, -2.73
OS grid ref:NT 54 73

East Lothian sits on the east coast of Scotland, a low-lying coastal strip just east of Edinburgh with wide sandy bays, rocky cliffs and the rolling Lammermuir Hills to the south. The shoreline is punctuated by dramatic landmarks such as Bass Rock and Tantallon Castle, and the long-distance John Muir Way runs through the area.

The area has a rich history from prehistoric sites to medieval burghs: Haddington remains the historic county town while ports like North Berwick and Dunbar keep strong maritime traditions. It is internationally known for golf, with famous courses at Gullane, Muirfield and North Berwick, and it celebrates its connection to conservationist John Muir.

Economically the council area mixes agriculture, food and seafood production with a busy tourism sector and many commuters to Edinburgh; birdwatching, coastal walking and golf bring year-round visitors. Small towns and villages give a friendly, close-knit feel while good rail and road links make it popular for day-trips and second homes.
