Tranent is a town in East Lothian, Scotland, lying roughly ten miles east of Edinburgh on the edge of the old coalfield and close to the coast at Cockenzie and Port Seton. It began as a market and mining settlement and still shows that mix of stone-built streets, industrial heritage such as the nearby Prestongrange estate and early waggonways used to move coal, alongside more recent housing that has made it a commuter base for the capital.
The town has a strong local identity rooted in its mining past and in the social history of the area - notably the 1797 protest against impressment, often referred to as the Tranent Riot, which remains a defining episode in local memory. Today Tranent combines that heritage with community life, modest retail provision and easy access to coastal walks and museums around Prestonpans, so industrial history sits alongside modern suburban living.
