Cowdenbeath is a former coal‑mining town in central Fife, Scotland, set on a ridge that gives it surprisingly good views across the surrounding valley. It grew in the 19th and early 20th centuries around the pits and railways and today wears that industrial past in its streets and buildings while serving as a local service centre with shops, a railway station on the Fife Circle line and a proud football club, Cowdenbeath FC, nicknamed the Blue Brazil.
Immediately to the south lies the smaller village of Lumphinnans, historically tied to the same mining economy and noted for a strong sense of community and labour tradition; local murals and commemorations recall that heritage. Like many towns in the area it has seen economic change since the pits closed, with regeneration efforts, social housing and many residents now commuting to larger centres such as Edinburgh while retaining a close‑knit village character.
