The town of Bathgate in West Lothian, Scotland sits roughly midway between Edinburgh and Glasgow, on low ground at the foot of the Bathgate Hills. Once a farming settlement, it now lies close to the M8 corridor and is well connected by the reopened Airdrie–Bathgate rail link, which has strengthened its role as a commuter town for both cities.
Bathgate has a strong industrial heritage - coal mining and the 19th-century oil‑shale industry shaped much of its growth - and traces of that past sit alongside modern housing, retail and light manufacturing. The town also benefits from active community groups, local events and easy access to hill walks in the Bathgate Hills, giving it a mix of suburban and semi‑rural character.
