Dunfermline is a historic town in Fife, Scotland, set on low-lying ground a few miles north of the Firth of Forth and within easy reach of Edinburgh. Once a medieval royal burgh and the burial place of kings at Dunfermline Abbey, it today has a population of roughly 50,000–60,000 and a pleasantly mixed townscape of old stone buildings, parks and more modern housing.
Its cultural identity is closely tied to industrial and philanthropic history: it was the childhood home of Andrew Carnegie and hosts the Carnegie Library & Galleries and the tree-filled Pittencrieff Park he gifted. Traditionally driven by coal, linen and engineering, the economy has shifted to retail and services - with the Kingsgate Centre and a strong commuter link to the capital - while local life still revolves around community sport (notably Dunfermline Athletic) and access to the coastal walking routes such as the Fife Coastal Path.
