The Lochgelly, Cardenden and Benarty area sits in central Fife, Scotland, made up of small towns and villages clustered around the shallow freshwater Loch Gelly and the prominent rise of Benarty Hill. The hill and loch give unexpectedly pleasant walking and wildlife opportunities for such an industrial‑looking part of the county, and local sports clubs, community centres and events keep a strong sense of place.
Once dominated by coal mining, the area has undergone economic change since pit closures in the late 20th century, with a mixture of local employment and commuters travelling to places such as Kirkcaldy and Glenrothes. There remain social and economic challenges in pockets of the community, but active regeneration projects, volunteer groups and the railway link at Cardenden have helped sustain local life and identity.
