The ward centred on Uibhist a Tuath sits in the middle of the Outer Hebrides within the council area of Na h-Eileanan Siar, covering much of North Uist and surrounding skerries. It’s a low-lying, glacially sculpted landscape of sandy beaches, machair grassland, freshwater lochs and peat bogs, with settlements clustered around the ferry and service hub at Lochmaddy and linked to neighbouring islands by causeways.
The community remains strongly Gaelic-speaking with deep crofting and fishing traditions, and the local economy mixes small-scale agriculture, wildlife tourism and essential services; the machair and lochans support internationally important birdlife that draws nature visitors. You’ll also find layers of history from prehistoric remains through Norse–Gaelic influence, plus a lively cultural life of music and Gaelic song and the day-to-day resilience of dispersed island communities keeping schools, shops and community projects central to life here.
