The Carse of Gowrie is a low-lying, fertile strip on the north bank of the River Tay between Perth and Dundee, sheltered by the Sidlaw Hills. Its rich alluvial soils and mild riverside microclimate have made it one of Scotland’s traditional fruit- and market-garden areas, with orchards and soft-fruit growing a distinctive feature of the landscape.
Today the area mixes long-established farming communities with people who commute to nearby towns, and small settlements such as Errol and Invergowrie punctuate the plain. There’s notable wildlife along the river margins, good walking and cycling, and a visible historic layering from medieval landholding patterns to the neat rows of modern horticulture, giving the place a quiet, rural character with strong local identity.
