Blackwood sits on a ridge in the Sirhowy Valley within the South Wales Valleys, part of the county borough of Caerphilly. The town grew rapidly in the 19th century with coal and iron working and still shows that heritage in a compact high street of Victorian and Edwardian buildings overlooking the former mining landscape.
Today Blackwood combines local shops and light industry with a commuter flow to Cardiff and Newport, while cultural life is anchored by the restored Blackwood Miners' Institute and an active community and sporting scene, typified by local rugby and volunteer groups that have driven recent regeneration and maintained a strong local identity.
