Butetown is an inner‑city district of Cardiff in Wales, sitting beside the old docklands and the inner harbour once dominated by coal exports and international shipping. Historically and popularly known as Tiger Bay, the neighbourhood fronts onto what is now Cardiff Bay and has been reshaped by the decline of the docks and later waterfront regeneration.
The area is notable for its long history of multiculturalism, shaped by sailors and dockworkers from Yemen, Somalia, the Caribbean, Ireland and beyond, which gave rise to a rich blend of cultural life, music and cuisine. Economic change in the mid‑20th century brought hardship and housing renewal, but local activism and heritage projects have helped preserve community identity even as new developments, offices and visitor attractions have altered the social and economic fabric.
