The electoral ward of Ely sits in the west of Cardiff, Wales, taking its name from the nearby River Ely. It is largely a residential area developed as a substantial council estate through the mid‑20th century, with a mix of terraced and semi‑detached housing, local shopping parades and community facilities serving a dense local population.
Like many post‑war suburbs it has experienced economic and social challenges but also a strong sense of local identity, active community groups and ongoing regeneration projects aimed at improving housing, youth services and public spaces. The ward is a short bus ride from the city centre and lies close to green spaces and attractions such as St Fagans, giving residents convenient access to both urban amenities and the nearby countryside.
