Carmarthen is the county town of Carmarthenshire in Wales, sitting on the east bank of the River Towy. One of the oldest settlements in the country, it grew up around the Roman fort of Moridunum and the ruins of Carmarthen Castle underline its medieval importance; the riverside and surrounding rolling farmland make it a long‑standing market and service centre for a largely rural county.
Today the town blends a compact historic centre with retail, public services and light industry, alongside further education at Coleg Sir Gâr. A strong bilingual Welsh‑English community supports local markets, arts and music, and the town’s associations with legend and history help sustain a modest tourism trade alongside agriculture and everyday commercial life.
