Bala sits at the northern end of Llyn Tegid, the largest natural lake in Wales, and is the source of the River Dee. Nestled on the edge of Snowdonia National Park in Gwynedd, the town’s setting of hills, shoreline and moorland makes it a focal point for walking and water sports and gives it a distinctly scenic, rural character.
Locally there’s a strong Welsh-language and nonconformist tradition - historically reinforced by institutions such as the nineteenth-century theological college - and the economy leans on tourism, outdoor activities and small-scale local businesses. Visitors often notice the preserved Bala Lake Railway, the compact market-town centre and the steady stream of watersports and angling enthusiasts drawn to the lake.
