Y Bala is a small market town in Gwynedd, Wales, sitting on the northern shore of Llyn Tegid (Bala Lake), the largest natural lake in Wales. The lake is of glacial origin and the town lies on the edge of Snowdonia, making it a popular base for watersports, birdwatching and hillwalking as well as for visitors exploring the surrounding uplands.
Locally the town has a strong Welsh-speaking identity and a history shaped by Nonconformist chapel culture and 19th-century figures such as Thomas Charles - the Mary Jones Bible story is often linked to the area. Today Bala mixes tourism (including the preserved Bala Lake Railway), small shops and farming, with community events and a compact historic centre that still feels distinctly Welsh.
