The village of Dolwyddelan sits in the steep-sided Lledr Valley in the heart of Snowdonia, within the county of Conwy in north Wales. It lies on the A470 and is served by the Conwy Valley railway, making it a handy base for hillwalking, riverside strolls along the Lledr and short drives to Betws-y-Coed and Blaenau Ffestiniog.
Dominated by the atmospheric ruins of Dolwyddelan Castle, reputedly built by Llywelyn the Great in the 13th century, the locality bears the legacy of Victorian slate quarrying and small-scale hill farming. Today the economy mixes tourism, forestry and commuting, and the community remains strongly Welsh-speaking with chapel-based social life and plenty of outdoor pursuits on the surrounding fells.
