Beddgelert sits in Gwynedd, tucked into Snowdonia National Park at the meeting of the River Glaslyn and the River Colwyn, beneath the dramatic walls of the Aberglaslyn Pass and the lower flanks of Yr Wyddfa (Mount Snowdon). The village is best known for the folkloric tale of Gelert the hound and the “grave” that draws many visitors, while its landscape of river, valley and peaks makes it a popular base for walking and climbing.
Locally the economy blends tourism and traditional agriculture: small farms and sheep grazing remain visible alongside pubs, cafés, craft shops and accommodation serving hikers and families. The community has a strong Welsh-speaking presence and a social life geared towards outdoor recreation and hospitality, with the preserved narrow-gauge Welsh Highland Railway adding a historic transport link and extra attraction for visitors.
