Gerlan sits in Gwynedd on the northern fringe of Snowdonia, just a short distance from Bethesda and the dramatic slopes of the Ogwen Valley. The ward mixes tight-knit former quarry terraces and more modern housing with surrounding upland and pasture, so it feels both residential and very much part of the mountain landscape.
The area bears the imprint of the slate industry, notably the nearby Penrhyn Quarry, and retains a strong Welsh-speaking community with local clubs and parish life shaping social life. Good links to Bangor and the national park make it convenient for commuters and popular with walkers and rock-climbers exploring the local scenery.
