Dwyrain Porthmadog occupies the eastern side of the harbour town of Porthmadog in Gwynedd, sitting beside the tidal Glaslyn estuary and the sandflats of Traeth Mawr with the lower slopes of Snowdonia close at hand. Its shoreline and nearby marshes give the ward a strong sense of place and make it a handy base for walking, birdwatching and water-based activities.
Rooted in the 19th-century slate and maritime trade that linked the area to places like Blaenau Ffestiniog and celebrated today by the preserved Ffestiniog Railway, the ward blends long-standing Welsh-speaking communities with a tourism economy of cafés, boat services and holiday accommodation. Socially it reflects common coastal tensions - local services and community groups work alongside the pressures of second homes and seasonal trade to keep the neighbourhood lively year-round.
