Trelewis is a small former coal‑mining village in the heart of the South Wales Valleys, administratively part of Merthyr Tydfil County Borough in Wales. It grew up during the 19th‑century industrial expansion and its terraces, miners’ institutes and community buildings still reflect that heritage, set beneath surrounding hills with easy access to countryside and views towards the Brecon Beacons.
Today Trelewis retains a close‑knit community feel, with village halls, social clubs and grassroots sport at its centre, while economic change since the pits closed has seen many residents commuting to nearby towns. Local regeneration projects and community activity aim to preserve the village’s industrial past while emphasising outdoor recreation and links to the wider amenities of Merthyr Tydfil and the region.
