Treharris is a former coal‑mining town in the county borough of Merthyr Tydfil in Wales, sited in the wooded Taff Bargoed valley. The village grew up in the 19th century around the coal industry and much of the local landscape now combines rows of terraced housing with regenerated parkland and former industrial sites, notably the attractive Parc Taff Bargoed which has walking and cycling routes and wetland restoration.
Like many former mining communities it experienced economic decline after pit closures but has a strong local identity, active community groups and sports clubs, and has benefited from regeneration projects and better road and rail links that make it within commuting distance of Cardiff and Newport. Visitors will notice the visible industrial heritage, community facilities and a quieter, more rural feel compared with the nearby town centres.
